Chapter 23
Is That a Presentation in Your Pocket?
Kate
Perhaps Whispers Wood wasn’t quite ready for Powerpoint presentations and she should go with the trusty old flip-chart she could see leaning precariously at the side of the stage. In less than two hours she and Daniel would have presented their ideas for the village fete theme and the voting would be being counted.
Speaking of Daniel…
Where was he? Kate scanned the growing crowd, looking for someone a head taller than everyone, who shot her senses into overload.
‘Where should we sit?’ Juliet asked Kate.
Kate looked at the rows of chairs set out in front of the stage. Nerves hovered in the pit of her belly. She took out some of the papers from her bag and started fanning herself. It was a balmy summer’s evening and although the doors and windows of The Clock House had been thrown open to let air circulate, there were more people here than she’d expected.
‘Somewhere near the front?’ Juliet asked, ‘So you can get to the stage easily?’
Kate promptly grabbed a hold of the fringing on Juliet’s jacket to stop her. ‘Or,’ she suggested, ‘somewhere at the back near the exits in case it’s a tough crowd.’
‘Don’t think of it is a tough crowd, think of it as your crowd.’
Turning around, Kate spotted seats on the very back row and made a beeline for them.
‘Will you at least try and relax?’ Juliet said, as she took her seat next to her.
‘Yeah, yeah, yeah,’ Kate murmured, plonking her jacket and bag on the last two available seats next to theirs so that no one could sit on them. ‘Would have been a cinch if you’d let me bring along the hip-flask.’
‘You don’t need a drink. There’s no way anyone could have done more to prepare for this meeting. You are going to rock this, Spa Girl.’
‘Call me Wonder Woman and maybe I’ll believe you,’ she said, scanning the crowd for Daniel again. She didn’t dare tell Juliet, but a lot of the time she was ‘researching’ she was actually thinking about Daniel. Instead of giving herself props for being mature and turning down his dinner invitation, she’d been wondering how to wrangle another one from him so that she could accept. ‘Don’t you think there’s one other person who might have prepared better than me?’
‘Who?’
‘Who-shmoo, Daniel Westlake, that’s who.’
‘Oh. Him.’ Juliet shook her head. ‘Nah. I’m not worried. You know this place, Kate. You’ve been to countless village fetes on this very village green. Plus, you’ve included every blessed idea in every top ten list of how to put on the perfect fete, imaginable.’
‘Ladies and gentlemen,’ Crispin Harlow’s voice rang out across the room as he walked up the steps to the stage and took his natural position behind the podium. ‘Thank you all for coming out tonight…’
‘Crap,’ Kate whispered, hunkering down in her seat, her butterflies getting more serious by the minute.
‘What?’ Juliet whispered.
Kate shot her a quick grin. ‘I forgot the kitchen sink. I was supposed to put it in my Everything-Including-the-Kitchen-Sink Fete Plan.
